Sonya Diimmler
“Painting is an emotional and physical response to the world.”
Sonya Diimmler paints dreamy contemporary landscapes, South Carolina lakes and skies, and large abstracts in dramatic color. She works fast and loose, wet into wet, favoring gesture and line over realism.
Sonya came to painting in 2015, while caring for her aging parents, and it became her way of working through loss and grief. She quickly built a daily practice and has studied with Mary Bentz Gilkerson and Michael Story.
Her first solo exhibit hung at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in 2021. Her work has since won awards from the SC State Fair, the Union County Arts Council and the Crooked Creek Art League, and her abstracts were juried into the 2025 Biennial at 701 Center for Contemporary Art. She's also active in Chapin's arts community, helping lead public art projects.
